About the event
Dear Alumnae, dear Alumni, dear Friends,
The “Verein der Freunde der London School of Economics and Political Science e.V.” was established in June 1984, initiated by the (German-British) LSE director Lord Dahrendorf. LSE has always championed excellence in teaching and research, encapsulated by LSE’s motto “rerum cognoscere causas,” while also striving to create a positive societal impact. Since 1895, intellectual rigor has been the foundation of an LSE education. The German Friends of LSE were founded in this same tradition, maintaining the spirit of debate and exchange among alumnae and alumni. We cordially invite you to our 40th Anniversary celebration.
On Saturday afternoon, Professor Sönke Neitzel, chair of War Studies at the University of Potsdam and one of the leading experts in international history of the 19th and 20th centuries and military history, renowned for his work and research on military strategy and operations, as well as the socio-political implications of military actions throughout history, will discuss the consequences of the Ukraine war on German and European security policy.
Professor Michael Cox, Founding Director of LSE IDEAS and Emeritus Professor of International Relations at LSE, and a long-time friend of the German Friends of LSE, will chair a panel on “Rethinking the Transatlantic Relationship After Trump“. He will also remind us of Lord Dahrendorf, the former Director of the LSE, who initiated the foundation of our alumni association, The German Friends of LSE e.V..
Saturday evening, we will enjoy a reception and dinner at the prestigious Berlin Capital Club, located above the rooftops of Berlin’s beautiful Gendarmenmarkt square. We are honored to welcome the new LSE President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Larry Kramer, who will give the dinner speech.
On Sunday, we will explore the city of Potsdam, the capital of the federal state of Brandenburg. Our journey will take us to the Old and the New Market, the former City Canal, some Gates, the Dutch Quarter and parts of the old baroque city. We will also learn about some Prussian kings. We will conclude our weekend with lunch in the Dutch quarter.
Please have a look at the programme below.
